Laguna De Apoyo is a blue/green crater lake surrounded by jungle, in a quiet forested area just a short drive from Granada. Our busy schedule of reading, napping, swimming and canoeing was interrupted briefly by a bag thief and a gang of machete wielding gardening staff. An older, rounder local man sauntered up to one of the beach chairs, nonchalantly picked up a back pack, and continued on his way. Someone noticed, yelled out and the chase was on. The man realised the staff were after him, ditched the back pack and jumped into the lake to escape. Then, out of the jungle materialised a gang of machete wielding locals, presumably staff of the hostel who had been working on the garden, who began waiving their machetes, and yelling at the man to give up and come ashore. He wasn’t ready to give up however, and his large round belly allowed him to float in the lake for some time. He floated, and they waived their machetes and yelled at him to come ashore. This stand-off lasted for quite some time, until he decided there was no escape, and gave up, returning to shore and to his captors. |
